Rose, Rita and Edith, who live at Lansbury Court in Sunderland, took a trip down memory lane recently when they visited a place of local history: The Donnison School, in Sunderland. James Donnison opened the school in 1798, in order to offer free education to the poor residents of Sunderland’s East End. More recently, the site has been reopened as a North East Heritage site, offering a glimpse into the region’s past. The group enjoyed being given a tour around the old building, as well as taking part in a craft session, and enjoying Afternoon Tea. “It is lovely to be able to come back and visit this part of town,” commented Rose, “I remember growing up here; the school was a piece of history even then, so it is nice that the building is being looked after.” Edith added, “I remember visiting my relatives in the East End. The area has certainly improved since those days, but the community spirit is still here.” Activity Coordinator Christine Callaghan said, “Our region has such a rich heritage, and we are fortunate to have places like this to visit and reminisce about the changes in landscape and industry.” To keep up to date with news from the home, follow us on facebook.com/orchardcarehome/
