Blossoming with Orchard: Roxie’s Journey in Care
Here at Orchard Care Homes, we love celebrating the people who make our homes such special places to live and work. One colleague whose journey really shows how a career in care can grow and flourish is Roxanne ‘Roxie’ Kershaw, Deputy Manager at Lofthouse Grange and Lodge Care Home.
Roxie’s story is a wonderful example of how starting a role in care can lead to a long-term, rewarding career, filled with learning, progression and meaningful moments.

Her journey into care began at just 17 years old, when she joined Middleton Park Lodge as a Domestic Assistant. It didn’t take long for her passion for supporting others to shine through, and by the age of 18, she had progressed into a Care Assistant role.
Alongside her day-to-day work, Roxie completed her NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Health and Social Care, as well as the Care Certificate. With a natural enthusiasm for learning and a genuine connection with residents, she soon stepped into Senior Care Assistant and Team Leader roles, all within the same home.
In 2019, Roxie transferred to Lofthouse Grange and Lodge, continuing her role as a Senior Care Assistant. While working at our Wakefield-based home, she completed her NVQ Level 4 qualification, a key milestone that supported her next step into leadership. Soon after, she was promoted to her current role as Deputy Manager.
Reflecting on her journey, Roxie highlights how important development opportunities have been throughout her career: ‘One of my favourite things about working at Orchard is the clear and supportive career progression. The organisation provides excellent opportunities for growth and development, allowing people like me to advance their skills and take on new responsibilities.’
Roxie says that although no two days are ever the same, that is exactly how she likes it. ‘My role is fast-paced and varied,’ she says. ‘Each morning starts with a walk around the home to check on residents and make sure everything is safe and running smoothly.’
From there, her day might include audits, flash meetings, working alongside external professionals and supporting colleagues across the home. A big part of her role also involves building strong, trusting relationships with residents’ families and friends. ‘If the team needs extra support, I am always happy to step in and provide hands-on care too,’ Roxie adds. ‘That connection with residents is incredibly important to me.’
What truly motivates Roxie is the difference she and her team make to residents’ lives. With over 20 years’ experience in care, she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and helping others grow in confidence and ability, particularly when it comes to supporting people living with dementia. ‘I love helping colleagues learn and develop new skills,’ she says. ‘Seeing that growth, and the positive impact it has on residents’ quality of life, is incredibly rewarding.’
For Roxie, it is about creating a safe, welcoming environment where residents feel comfortable, valued and heard. She works hard to ensure people can continue enjoying meaningful activities and hobbies, with the right level of support to help them live well every day.
Outside of work, Roxie is a busy mum to two. Balancing work and home life can be a challenge, but Roxie has found what works for her. ‘Routine is essential,’ she laughs. ‘A to-do list is a must. If I don’t write things down, I will forget instantly. I always try to prioritise quality time with my family and stay as organised as possible.’

For anyone considering a career in care, Roxie has some simple but heartfelt advice: ‘Invest in comfortable footwear, stay open to new opportunities, and always treat people with kindness and understanding. The small details really do make a big difference.’
From her first role as a Domestic Assistant to Deputy Manager, Roxie’s journey shows just how far dedication, compassion and a love of learning can take you. We are incredibly proud to have her as part of the Orchard team and look forward to seeing what the future holds. Thank you for speaking with us, Roxie!
