People Stories: Terence at Cherry Trees rewinds the deck
Amazing homes, amazing people – that’s Orchard for you! One very talented resident at Cherry Trees Care Home, Terence, has had some brilliant adventures and loves telling stories of his DJ and surfing days; we couldn’t wait to hear more about them!

At 73 years-young, Terence is just as interesting, humorous and spontaneous as he always has been. He loves chatting to his friends at Cherry Trees about days gone by and sharing stories of ‘the good old days’.
In 1969, at the age of only 16, Terence’s life was already heading in an exciting direction as he moved to Albufeira, Portugal, where he’d spend the next 6 years of his life: “I spoke some Portuguese back then and still remember ‘um pouco’ of it now!”
Sheffield is and always has been known for its nightlife and music scene, and it’s a scene which Terence knows all too well! In 1978, Terence first entered the world of music as a DJ at The Windmill nightclub. He brought a passion for music with him to the club, as well as a natural flair with the people.
Although originally Rotherham born and bred, Terence’s adventures eventually took him down to Newquay where he developed a real passion for surfing and spending time in the water. This passion is what led to him owning three different surf shops of his own!
“When I moved down to Newquay, I tried out surfing and loved it! You had to give it a go… it was part of the culture!” added Terence.
Terence never did stick to just one hobby, but followed many all at once. As a fan of American and British football and the sports scene in general, Terence grew up admiring and following many different players who shaped his dreams and goals!
Terence has lived at the wonderful Rotherham care home since July 2025 receiving residential dementia care. He has made friendships, engaged in activities and continued to pursue his passions with the help of the fantastic care team and his personalised care plan. Whether that is sharing stories over some good food, listening to his favourite songs (such as Heaven Must have Sent You – The Elgins) or maintaining his Catholic traditions, Terence is always busy and always smiling.
“Terence is such an interesting, knowledgeable character and we love hearing his stories. He has so much life experience and we all learn a lot from him!” said Home Manager Sharron.
Thank you to Terence and his family for sharing his lovely stories with us, and thanks to Sharron and the wonderful Cherry Trees team for encouraging Terence to pursue and discuss all of his beloved pastimes.
