Messages of Wisdom and Hope for 2025

06 January 2025 News

As we step into a brand new year, it's the perfect moment to pause and reflect on the hopes, dreams, and aspirations we hold for the future. It's also a chance to listen to the wisdom of those who’ve lived through many years and have valuable insights to share.

At Lansbury Court Care Home in Sunderland, we asked some of our residents about their wishes for the year ahead and what messages they’d like to pass on to younger generations. Their thoughts serve as reminders that each year offers us the opportunity to grow, connect, and pass down the wisdom that unites us all. Let’s take a look at  what they had to say:

Jean’s (80) advice is as heartfelt as it is simple: “Be nice to each other.”

Jennie (95) said :“Help each other and be good.” Whether it’s offering a helping hand or just being kind, it’s these little things that really make a difference.

Hazel (79) says “Keep working hard at your jobs.” In a time where distractions are everywhere, staying focused and dedicated is key.

Norma’s (95) message is all about kindness: “Be kind to people and never hold a grudge.” Life’s too short to hang onto negativity - spread kindness instead!

Malcolm (70) shared his message for the younger generation with us: “Tolerate each other regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, and other differences. We share one world and should live together in harmony.” Simple but powerful!

Paddock Stile Manor Care Home in Houghton-le-Spring is a cozy and welcoming place, offering dementia care, residential care, and respite care. We asked some of the lovely residents to share their hopes and wishes for the new year. Here’s what they had to say:

Jean's (88) wish is as big as wishes get - “World peace.” A truly heartfelt hope that we could all get behind.

Marjorie’s (81) wish  is all about prioritising quality time with her loved ones. Her wish for 2025 is simple but meaningful - “I want to enjoy more time with my family.”

Jackie (73) has got her eye on the prize -“I’m most looking forward to winning the pools!” We’ll be keeping our fingers (and toes!) crossed for you, Jackie!

Over at our centre of excellence, Archers Court Nursing Care Home in Sunderland, we had the chance to ask some of our wonderful people for their advice for the year ahead, and their words are filled with wisdom, heart, and of course a touch of humour.

Ian (81) shares a piece of timeless advice: “Get a good job.” It’s a simple but powerful reminder that ambition and hard work are always important, no matter what year it is.

Michael (72) knows the value of family and integrity. His advice is straightforward but meaningful: “Always keep your promises and love your family, near or far.”

Esther's (75) advice is all about perseverance. “Don’t give up on your dreams.” Whether it’s a big goal or a small one, Esther encourages us all to keep pushing forward and never stop believing in ourselves!

Residents of Ashlea Lodge Care Home in Sunderland shared some thoughtful messages for us all to take away and remember.

Margarett (79) reminds us of what truly matters most - “Cherish and find happiness within your family.” These words echo the sentiment that the people closest to us are the ones who make life truly special, and it's them who bring us the greatest joy.

Sylvia (86) offers a reality check that we can all benefit from: “Live better and get off your phones!” In a world where we’re often glued to screens, Sylvia encourages us to step away from our devices and embrace the present moment.

Tom (89): “Work hard and enjoy your life.” It’s a reminder that while dedication to work is important, we must never forget to enjoy the journey and have fun along the way

As we step into 2025, we’re reminded that what truly matters in life isn’t the rush of resolutions or the pressure of grand goals - it’s the simple, yet powerful acts of kindness, hard work, and the love of family. It’s about showing up for each other, keeping our promises, and nurturing the relationships that make life worth living.

Let’s commit to being kinder, working with purpose, and cherishing every moment with those we love. Here’s to a 2025 filled with more heart, more connection, and more of what truly counts.

A huge thank you to all our homes who participated and to everyone who shared their wisdom with us.
