Lansbury Court in Sunderland and Chorley Lodge in Lancashire embraced World Milk Day recently, by running milkshake making activities for residents in the homes. A variety of flavoured milkshakes looked very fitting in the 1950s diner at Lansbury Court, when residents Brenda and Betty spent the morning making and tasting milkshakes. The ladies sat down to discuss their favourite flavours in the American diner, which is a recent addition to the home. Banana, strawberry and melon were the flavours of choice by residents at Chorley Lodge, as they experimented with the best combinations. They found that whole milk and ice cream worked really well. World Milk Day is celebrated at the beginning of June and is a day which notes the important contributions of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihoods and nutrition. Below are some interesting facts that you may not know about milk: Cows produce 90 per cent of the world’s milk. A glass of milk contains three key nutrients - calcium, vitamin D and potassium. The UK currently produces 13.7 billion litres (3.01 billion gallons) a year. Buffalo milk has 25 per cent more protein than cow’s milk. The world’s first commercial dromedary dairy opened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1986, selling camel milk at £1.20 a litre. Historical facts: Cow’s milk was first drunk by humans 10,000 years ago in what is now Afghanistan and Iran. For regular updates on news in our homes, follow us on Facebook here:
