Leeds United fan enjoys ultimate day out at Elland Road
What would be your perfect day out in Leeds? A day trip to Royal Armouries Museum, or maybe a bit of retail therapy and hitting the shops on Briggate? Well, for Bernard, his ideal day out was to visit his beloved Leeds United stadium on Elland Road – and that’s exactly what he got when he enjoyed an exciting trip to the stadium with his family!

Residents living at Paisley Lodge Care Home all have a variety of likes, hobbies and passions; and for Bernard, he’s always been a huge fan of Leeds United – something which he ‘wears like a badge of honour’.
Joining our dementia-specialist care home in September, the team at Paisley Lodge were quick to discover his passion for the club, and Activities Co-Ordinator, Liz, knew all too well the importance of remaining connected with your football team. “We were having a reminiscence session, talking everything from his life history to his career, when Bernard told me how much he loves Leeds United. As an LUFC fan myself, I understood his passion, and wanted to help fulfil his wish of going to the stadium again.”
Liz contacted Leeds United, who were more than happy to invite Bernard and guests of his choice on a private tour of the stadium. He chose to invite his daughter, Caroline, and son-in-law, Alan - both of whom are huge LUFC fans themselves.

Alongside Liz, the group went for their private tour of Elland Road wearing their favourite LUFC kit. The tour included a visit to the media suite, the home-team changing rooms and they even got to get up close and personal with the infamous pitch, which Liz said was the most memorable part of the day.
Being a Leeds fan since he was a child, Bernard told us how pleased he was to be able to return to Elland Road. “I haven’t been to the stadium since the 80s, so it was great to be back. I had a great day with my family and I got a match scarf which I’ll treasure forever.”

Within just one month of Bernard joining our dementia-specialist care home, he’s already experienced the exceptional person-centred care we pride ourselves on, thanks to Activities Co-ordinator, Liz.
This trip is just one of the many times Liz has created unforgettable events for our residents; last year, she surprised Michael with an AC/DC tribute gig – and just a few months ago she organised a visit from two very spritely and adorable lambs. When we say every day is different in our award-winning care homes, we really mean it!
A huge thank you to Liz, Bernard, Caroline and Alan for allowing us to share your experience, and we can’t wait to hear what Bernard gets up to next.
