Rocking night out: AC/DC Tribute Band Leaves Paisley Lodge Resident 'Thunderstruck’

We chatted to Michael, the ultimate rock and metal enthusiast at Paisley Lodge Dementia Care Home in Armley, about his experience at a killer tribute night he recently attended for his all-time favourite band, AC/DC.

Michael, who has made his home on the residential dementia floor of the home for the past 3 years said of his love of live music: “It’s the way it makes me feel, it makes me feel alive!” Michael lives with dementia and is also registered blind, neither of which prove to be barriers to rocking out!

During a casual chat, Michael and a colleague discovered their shared love for rock and metal, noticing Michael's Metallica t-shirt. The colleague, also a fan, suggested they attend an AC/DC tribute band show together later that month. Excited, Michael agreed, and they promptly booked tickets to see the gig.

However, falling ill on the day of the gig the colleague could no longer attend. Luckily, Activities Coordinator Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Garbutt stepped in and took Michael to see Live Wire, the AC/DC tribute act at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, just a few miles away. They were treated like VIPs, with their own section in front of the stage. Lizzie remarked, "The staff at Brudenell Social Club were attentive and very accommodating to our party. I have never had such a fantastic experience at a gig; it truly made our night."

Live Wire played all the hits of AC/DC including Back in Black and War Machine, with Michael saying that the 1990 hit Thunderstruck was his favourite of the evening.

“I had the best time in ages as I haven’t been able to go to a concert for such a long time. It really did make my day, it made me very emotional and very happy. I would like to say a huge thank you Lizzy, our activities coordinator, for making this happen and for coming with me. Also to my son Steven for coming with us; it was a perfect evening.”
