16 June 2025 News

Retirement is a big deal for many, but it’s not every day that someone gets a surprise celebration they’ll never forget. Heather Kerr, who has been the beloved chef at one of our Sunderland Homes, Archers Park, for an incredible 18 years, was recently treated to just that - a surprise send-off that brought her and some of her colleagues to happy tears.

For nearly two decades, Heather was the heart and soul of the kitchen at Archers Park. She whipped up delicious meals, ensured everyone was well-fed and content, and added a personal touch to daily life for both residents and colleagues.

The team at Archers Park wanted to say goodbye properly - and what better way than with a surprise retirement party? The result? Well, let’s just say Heather was absolutely overwhelmed with emotion when she walked into the room and realised what was going on. You can watch the priceless moment here:

Heather was lured into the home by the management team, thinking it was just a regular meeting. But when she walked in, she was greeted by her colleagues from both Archers Park and Archers Court, along with Regional Operations Manager Martin. Suddenly, confetti cannons went off, and the room erupted with cheers and applause.

Heather was completely taken by surprise and immediately burst into tears of joy. Her colleagues rushed to give her hugs and congratulate her on her retirement, making the moment even more special. It was an emotional and joyful celebration, the perfect way to honour Heather’s dedication to her art.

Home Manager, Marlena Derda, said, “Heather has been such an integral part of Archers Park for nearly two decades. Her warmth, dedication, and passion for cooking have touched the lives of so many. It’s not just the meals she’s prepared, but the love and care she’s put into everything she does. We’re thrilled to send her off with this special celebration - she absolutely deserves it!”

Marlena’s words truly capture the sauce of Heather’s impact. Over the years, Heather wasn’t just a chef; she became a true friend to many, always there with a smile, a listening ear, and, of course, a plate of something delicious. Her contributions will never be forgotten, and her absence will certainly be felt.

“I’ve loved every minute of it,” Heather said, as she wiped away a few happy tears. “It’s been a pleasure cooking for you all. I’ll miss it – but I won’t miss the washing up!”

A woman after our own hearts, clearly!

After 18 years of early mornings and busy kitchens, she’s off to embrace a slower pace of life, filled with time spent with her family and friends. But let’s be honest - we’re pretty sure she’ll still be whipping up a storm at home. Your retirement might bring about the end of an era, but your legacy is baked into the very heart of Archers Park. Enjoy every minute of your well-deserved retirement Heather - and remember, the kettle’s always on for you.
