The journey to becoming a Dementia Support Worker
After two decades in the finance sector and a diverse career spanning roles from an NHS receptionist to a Support Worker for adults with autism, Michelle Hughes found herself at a crossroads with where to take her career. ‘When COVID arrived, I wanted to do something that helped’ she recalls.
Her career change journey from finance to care didn’t happen overnight. She began by taking on a role as a support worker helping adults with autism, before moving on to work with people facing mental health challenges and physical disabilities. The experience Michelle built up in these roles eventually led to her taking on a Care Assistant position at Langfield Care Home 2 years ago.
Since joining Langfield, Michelle experienced significant professional growth. She recalls her initial doubts about whether she could succeed in this new field. However, her commitment and hard work have paid off, earning her an NVQ Level 2 qualification. This achievement has not only boosted her confidence but also fuelled her ambition to continue progressing in her career.
Back in September, Michelle completed her training to become a Dementia Support Worker, a role she is truly passionate about. ‘My favourite thing about my role is being able to help people to make their lives better,’ she shares. Michelle says she is driven by the smiles she brings to the faces of the people she cares for and the small victories that make a big difference in their daily lives. ‘There's no satisfaction quite like it, It makes me feel so content knowing that I made a positive impact on that person.’
‘I want to help those living with a dementia diagnosis to be able to continue to live life as normally as possible, helping them to carry on with normal daily tasks that we all take for granted.’
Michelle’s journey is a heartwarming reminder that it's never too late to pursue a career that aligns with our passions and values.
At Langfield Care Home, Michelle has found not just a job, but a mission to enhance the lives of the people she cares for.
As Michelle continues her training and looks forward to furthering her career in dementia care, her journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for others considering a similar path. Her compassion, resilience, and commitment are qualities that make her an invaluable member of the Langfield Care Home team and a true hero in the lives of the people she supports.
