There is a lot to be said about the positive impact on community relationships that comes from connecting care homes with their local schools. One such home, Ashlea Lodge in Sunderland, recently welcomed a group of students from Sandhill View Academy for what proved to be both an entertaining and educational afternoon of activities with residents. The visit followed hot on the heels of a previous trip, made by the slightly younger, but equally as enthusiastic, pupils from Broadway Junior School. A succulent chocolate sponge cake baked by the group of students and residents from the 40-bed home, proved a particular highlight, with the group soon enjoying the fruits of their labour together with a comforting cup of tea, and a game of bingo. After much discussion of how life in the area has changed over time, 101-year-old resident Jayne was more than happy to show the latest young guests her telegram from the Queen, and talk to the curious students about being a centenarian. Activity Coordinator Donna Hill says, “It is a testament to the warm and welcoming nature of our residents’ personalities that children of all ages enjoy visiting the home, and joining in with a variety of activities. We have a close relationship with all of the local schools and look forward to welcoming more young people in the future.” To keep up to date with news from the home, follow us on Facebook.com/orchardcarehome/
