Sharp as a Tack at 101: Meet Rene, Spirited Resident at Three Bridges Who Keeps The Care Team on Their Toes!

28 November 2025 News

At 101 years old, Irene “Rene” Chorley, a much-loved resident at our Warrington-based nursing home, Three Bridges, is proving that age really is just a number. With a sense of humour, grace, and a sharp wit that keeps everyone on their toes, Rene shows us all that vitality and joy can last well into your later years.

Rene and care colleague

Born in Hollywood (yes, you read that right!), a small village in South Birmingham, Rene’s life has been nothing short of fascinating. Growing up with four siblings, she recalls a childhood full of laughter, mischief, and the occasional uphill push of the family car when it stalled. And while she might be one of the oldest people living in the UK today, Rene's memories are as sharp as ever - her quick wit and dry humour are legendary among colleagues and fellow residents at Three Bridges, where she’s called home since 2022.

Rene started her career as a Tax Officer at just 17, and she’s still immensely proud of her professional achievements. “I was good at it. I loved my job,” she says with a smile. “You have to look after your money and always pay your taxes on time!”

Alongside her career, Rene’s greatest pride is her family. She and her late husband adopted a daughter, an experience she describes as one of the highlights of her life.

So, what’s the secret to Rene’s long, vibrant life? “I’ve always taken care of myself,” she explains. “I eat well, and I look after my skin.” Her glowing complexion is the result of a daily skincare routine - one she has never skipped, not even on the busiest of days. Rene also keeps her mind sharp with regular word searches and Sudoku puzzles, which have earned her the title of "the queen of conversation" at Three Bridges.

Rene’s humour is a key part of her charm. One colleague says, “She’s got the driest wit. You never quite know what she’s going to say next, but you know it’s always going to make you laugh!” Her infectious laughter and no-nonsense approach to life have made her a firm favourite among the care team and her fellow residents.

Rene enjoying VE day celebrations

The care team at Three Bridges describe Rene as someone who always loves to look her best, often wearing her favourite jewellery even in bed. And when it comes to special events, she’s never one to miss out - whether it’s celebrating VE Day, enjoying a visit from a musician, or indulging in a sweet treat from the ice cream van. If there’s fun to be had, Rene is always first in line!

When asked what advice she has for younger generations, Rene offers her wisdom with a simple yet powerful message: “Be kind to people, and make sure you learn and have fun too. Life is for living!” As for what she thinks has changed the most in her 101 years? “People,” she says, thoughtfully. “It’s the way we treat each other. That’s the biggest change.”

Rene’s ability to find joy in the everyday, to laugh in the face of life’s challenges, and to live fully is a wonderful reminder that age doesn’t have to slow you down. Whether she’s reminiscing about her days as a tax officer, cracking a joke with the care team, or just enjoying a sunny afternoon, Rene is proof that life is what you make of it, no matter how old you are.
