Reconnect: From old hobbies to new friendships at Archers Court
Our innovative Reconnect Communities allow people living with dementia to remain as independent as possible and continue to engage in activities which they have always enjoyed, but this is certainly not a journey that must be taken solo! Peter and Kathleen are a wonderful example of how Reconnect communities can also lead to the greatest of companionships, so we asked the pair a few questions about their friendship.
Peter moved into Archers Court in November 2022, and since Kathleen joined the home over a year ago, the pair have discovered much more than just old passions and comforts, they have found a true friend in one another. Sharon, Home Manager of the Sunderland care home, said that Peter and Kathleen “really look out for one another”, adding that “they are very similar and share the same interests… which does mean they can argue like man and wife at times!”.
Supporting people living with dementia to continue doing what they love is a key part of the Reconnect model; in the case of Peter and Kathleen, this has meant being able to share some fantastic days out together. Kathleen has always had a special place in her heart for horses, and Peter shares in this passion too! Indeed, one of Peter’s favourite memories was when the pair went to Herrington Park for cake and saw the horses. Spectacularly, the team at Archers Court Nursing Care Home also reunited Kathleen with her horse last year when they discovered that Rosie was being cared for at a local stables. Watch the video of Peter and Kathleen’s trip to see Rosie here!
Both of them love to spend their afternoons talking away to one another; Kathleen told us that “Peter and I love to talk about all sorts, particularly our younger days… but I’d say I talk the most!”.
With Archers Court being the first home within the Orchard Care Homes group to be entirely dedicated to specialist dementia care, Sharon is very passionate about the positive impact Reconnect Communities can have on people living with dementia. She emphasizes how small actions can make such a magical difference, adding that “as a manager, if you are passionate about your job then you can empower others within the team”.
Watching Peter and Kathleen’s friendship blossom over the last year, Sharon has observed a real sparkle in their eyes when they are sharing stories with one another. She even said that: “When you look at them chatting away, you see something lovely, a connection which is so real and melts my heart”.
The world could really do with more friendships like that of Peter and Kathleen, couldn’t it?
Thank you to the Archers Court team for always planning fantastic activities and days out for Peter and Kathleen – we can’t wait to see what they get up to next!
