Lansbury Court class of ‘24 prom!
If you think prom night is only for high schoolers, think again! Residents at Lansbury Court Care Home proved fun has no age limits with their very own glamorous prom celebration.
The team at Lansbury Court have thrown many parties over the years - but for 2024, they wanted to surprise their residents with a truly unforgettable experience. Their first senior prom, organised by the activities team, saw residents dress up in their finest gowns and suits to enjoy the celebrations.
Carol White, Activities Co-ordinator at our Sunderland care home, said the idea stemmed from seeing local schools enjoy their own proms, and didn’t want the residents to miss out. “Most of our residents have never been to prom, and all the hype from nearby schools finishing for summer got us thinking: why can’t our residents have a prom, too? I pitched the idea to the rest of the team, and everyone loved it!”
Jennie, Ruth and fellow residents living at the care home enjoyed a day full of singing, dancing and delicious food, with a special visit from local singer, Alex Hall, who performed the residents’ favourite hits. Family members, who helped organise amazing outfits for their loved ones, were also invited to the special event – some even came as prom dates!
Suzanne McKie, Lansbury Court Home Manager, said: “Seeing our people so happy was truly heart-warming. Events like this highlight the importance of community and connection, and we’re thrilled to have provided such a memorable experience for everyone.”
The day was praised by families and Facebook fans alike. “What an incredible thing to do!” commented Gemma, a follower of the Lansbury Court Care Home Facebook page. “You’ve seen the residents for what they are: amazing people who have lived incredible lives and deserve nothing but the best in their later years.”
Based in Castletown, the team at Lansbury Court pulled out all the stops with the decorations, including giant ‘PROM’ led letters, gold and black streamers and glamorous backdrops to take selfies in.
The day was also enjoyed by colleagues, and received glowing reviews across the board. “What an absolutely amazing afternoon” said Lynn, Administrator at the Sunderland care home. “It was brilliant seeing all our residents enjoying themselves. People ask why you work in a care home: this is the massive reward we get!”
We are so proud of the Lansbury Court team for organising such a successful prom! Congratulations on an amazing event – same again next year?
