Care Home Manager shaves head for Cancer Research UK!

Orchard Care Homes are extremely pleased to announce Sarah Golden-Hill, Home Manager at Castleford Lodge Care Home, has raised almost £700 for Cancer Research UK! We joined Sarah as she braved the shave, and found out why she decided to take on the challenge.

At our West Yorkshire care home, you can expect your day to be filled with fun and engaging activities; visits from Shetland ponies, Dolly Parton parties and silent discos – but residents and colleagues alike were particularly excited to witness Home Manager, Sarah, shave her head for charity.

Raising money for Cancer Research UK, Sarah told us why this charity is so important to her. “Cancer affects so many of us, and its impact is devastating. One of our colleagues has recently been diagnosed with cancer, so it feels even more meaningful to shave my head for CRUK.”

With the dutiful task of shaving Sarah’s hair being given to her wife, Jackie, the event was accompanied by karaoke, dancing and plenty of celebrations. Residents, colleagues and family members watched on as Sarah’s hair became shorter and shorter – with many people applauding her on her bravery!

After the shave was complete, Ellie, Clinical Lead, held a mirror up for Sarah to see her new do. Sarah immediately laughed as the crowd cheered her on for her efforts. "My head does feel lighter and a bit colder, but it's low maintenance at least and it was all for an amazing cause” said Sarah after she saw her (lack of) hair for the first time. “I put my straighteners away this morning and thought - I won't be needing them for a while!"

Being our chosen charity for 25-26, Sarah’s sacrifice has contributed a whopping £687 to the total fundraiser so far, which all care homes across the Orchard Care Homes group are supporting. We’re always impressed by Sarah’s giving nature, but even more so when we discovered this is just the first of a series of charity fundraisers for 2026! Sarah is also planning on a bungee jump this summer, with all funds raised going to the incredible work Cancer Research UK do. 

Braving the shave is one thing - but braving the shave in the middle of winter is another! A huge congrats and thank you to Sarah for taking the plunge, and we can’t wait to hear how the bungee jump goes.
