Proud ‘Eastender’ Peggy Foster celebrated her 100th birthday in style at Lansbury Court Care Home this July. Peggy, mother of five, grandmother of seven, great-grandmother of four and great-great-grandmother of one, has lived in Sunderland all her life and started work as a family maid when she left school at the age of 14. Peggy was a stay at home mum who was a key member of the local community, working at the local community centre as a dance teacher for many years. Surrounded by her friends, family and staff, Peggy enjoyed her day, receiving a presentation of flowers, presents and birthday cards, including a very special telegram from her the Queen. The day continued on a cheerful note with everybody joining in to sing a rendition of “By the Seaside”, a favourite of Peggy’s. As the party continued throughout the day, Peggy was treated to a performance of music, before receiving a special visit, and more flowers, from Deputy Mayoress, Cllr Doris MacKnight. The day ended with afternoon tea in the dining room. Peggy's daughter Margaret said, “It was such a fabulous day. Seeing mum and her friends enjoying themselves during the celebrations was lovely. The staff, who we consider to be her extended family, worked so hard to make her landmark birthday a day we will never forget”.
