A technically intricate handcrafted street scene, including Corgi dog head and drunken soldier, is the winning entry for this year’s Orchard Care Homes Bake-Off, and St Helen’s Home, Lymewood Court, is crowned the care group Winner. In a national competition that has produced over 60 cake creations on the theme of the Queen’s 90th Birthday, including an iced Queen’s Guard soldier’s head and an impressive three-tier tiara, chefs, cooks, activity coordinators and residents from the care group have been planning, creating and tasting for several months, in the hope of winning the coveted title. Comments Andy Savage, Food & Beverage Manager at Orchard Care Homes; “I was overwhelmed by the standard and detail from the Lymewood Court entry. The technical skill is exceptional, with great humour brought to the final piece." Carol Morley, Home Manager, said, “We are delighted with our win, the residents were so involved in the process, but it is the amazing skill of our cook, Mandy, who has brought this to life.” Andy Savage said of the whole competition; “This has been the most impressive year yet. All the cakes showed real imagination, amazing cake craft skills, teamwork and some brilliant stories emerged on how the cakes were designed.” The winning home receives a £100 voucher to spend and a luxury food hamper from Unilever Food Solutions.
