From resourceful to remarkable: Riverdale Care Home celebrates Recycle Week 2025

08 October 2025 News

Across many of our incredible care homes, we have recently got involved with Recycle Week 2025 – an annual event which motivates people to reuse and recycle more and help the environment. One home which is always going above and beyond is Riverdale Care Home in Chesterfield, and we just had to share some of their creations with you!

Creative button chopping boards

Activities Coordinator Wendy is always searching for the next project for herself and the residents to get stuck into, and Recycle Week has yet again reminded us just how artistic the home can be!

Every home has a drawer filled with arts and crafts paraphernalia, and most will have lots of buttons in there. Wendy and the care team gathered the old buttons together, found a set of little chopping boards which hadn’t yet been put to use and the rest was in the hands of the very talented residents.

Frank in particular thoroughly enjoyed upcycling these boards and creating lovely pieces of art: “I liked creating the boards with Wendy, she’s very creative and helpful. It’s good not to waste things!”

Another item which we all have laying around are old jigsaws with missing pieces which we no longer use; what better way to put them to use than creating beautiful pieces of art!

Robena was very proud of her jigsaw tree after carefully selecting colours which would represent autumn and the beginning of cosy season.

Wendy told us: “I do lots of crafts at home and love looking online for inspiration. I often sit on an evening looking for inspiration and was so excited to bring some ideas to life for Recycle Week.”

Egg trays made into poppy wreaths

With Recycle Week also being so close to upcoming events such as Remembrance Day and Halloween, it was only right to incorporate the projects together and begin making wonderful decorations.

With empty egg trays being used for poppy wreaths and discarded milk bottles being repurposed ghoulish Halloween party decorations, it’s safe to say that nothing at the marvellous Chesterfield care home goes to waste.

Wendy also told us: “Creative projects are good for residents as they keep their minds ticking and active! I love creating with them and think it is really important to keep everyone involved in decorating the home.”

Home Manager, Denise also added: “Here at Riverdale, we have so many residents who are very naturally creative and we are fortunate that Wendy is so inventive with her ideas – she really lets all of our imaginations flow. I’m so proud of the team for the efforts they have put into Recycle Week as helping the environment is so incredibly important to us.”

A huge well done to Wendy, Denise and all the residents and team members at Riverdale for never ceasing to amaze us with their creations. We are so impressed with their efforts for Recycle Week and recognise the importance of saving the planet, one masterpiece at a time!
