Determined Eckington Resident walks daily for a month to fundraise for Dementia UK
Meet Carol Stocks, an 84-year-old powerhouse who’s shown us the true meaning of determination. Carol is a resident at Eckington Court Nursing Home, and has spent the month of February on a mission - one that not only tested her strength and willpower but also brought together the community in our Derbyshire home in the most inspiring way.
Carol set herself the challenge of walking for at least 30 minutes every day throughout February to raise funds for Dementia UK. She didn’t just meet her goal - she surpassed it, walking for 28 consecutive days and raising over £150 for the charity.
But Carol’s journey wasn’t just about putting one foot in front of the other. Her drive and determination to get outside and meet her goals despite having to brave all kinds of weather became an inspiration for her fellow residents and the care team at Eckington. Many of them chose to join in on her daily walks, bringing an even stronger sense of community to the home.
Carol chose to support Dementia UK, a cause that is very close to her heart. “The thought of the money raised going towards research for a cure for dementia kept me going,” Carol explained. With Carol herself living with dementia, and many of her friends at Eckington Court also facing the condition, the charity’s work truly resonated with her.
Before moving into Eckington Court, she had a vibrant career as both a teacher and a window dresser. She’s also a proud mother of two daughters and has always had a passion for adventure. Even now, Carol and her daughters frequently embark on mini getaways, exploring new places and creating memories together.
At Eckington Court, Carol brings the same energy and enthusiasm to everything she does. Whether it’s crafting, knitting, playing bingo, singing, or sharing a laugh with her fellow residents, she’s always the life of the party. As colleagues at the home say, “Carol brings energy and joy wherever she goes!”
Trudy Godley, Home Manager, couldn’t be prouder of Carol’s achievements. “We knew nothing was going to stop Carol once she set her mind to it! Her enthusiasm was contagious, and before long, many of us were joining Carol on her daily walks. We are incredibly proud of what she has accomplished.”
Carol's fundraising journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when determination, heart, and community come together.
