“When I’m Cleaning Windows” resounded throughout the room as residents from Ashlea Lodge in Sunderland enjoyed a  musical performance by Ukulele group ‘The Bojangles’ recently. Held at their local community centre Bede Tower, the  performance was part of the Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Singing for the Brain’ event. Singing for the Brain is a regular event, held on the first Thursday of every month. Ashlea Lodge residents enjoy taking part in the sessions. Billy, Margaret, Ronnie, and Fred took part in the most recent, where they enjoyed singing along to the performances of songs from artists such as Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, and Elvis. The Bojangles’ ukulele covers gave the well-loved songs a Hawaiian twist, which was well received by residents, who approved of the unconventional performance. Activity Coordinator Donna Hill said, “Singing for the Brain is an important event in our social calendar. It is an interactive musical performance, where everyone is encouraged to join in, and given a proper vocal warm-up before the main event. It a great way for residents to reminisce through song, express themselves, and socialise within the local community.” The next event is to be held on Thursday 5th October.
