Ashlea Mews Care Home in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, launches a new Book Club for its residents and staff members. Since the Book Club was started, it has become increasingly popular amongst the residents and now has a considerable number of group members. The club was set up with the aim of bringing residents and staff together to discuss and reminisce about their favourite literature. The Book Club runs fortnightly and is advertised on the home’s notice boards. The group is always looking to build their collection of books and has received donations of books, magazines, newspapers and audio books from friends and family members. Lauren Grant, Activity Coordinator at Ashlea Mews, said “The club offers a chance for residents who have read books their whole life to continue their hobby and for residents who haven’t to start something new. “I believe this sort of activity is really comforting and will be beneficial to the health and wellbeing of the residents, and there is a great sense of accomplishment when we finish a book together”.
