Yoga can have many benefits such as calming and soothing, and we all know that laughter is the best medicine. So what happens when the two are combined?

Green Park Care Home in Warrington hold Laughing Yoga sessions twice a month. You might ask, what are laughing yoga session? Laughing Yoga sessions are a fun and interesting twist on traditional Yoga, it combines the simple breathing and stretching exercises of traditional yoga with light-hearted, laughter exercises.

Residents are encouraged to pretend to laugh whilst doing stretches, the idea is that even pretending to laugh can have similar physical and psychological benefits as real laughter. Of course, once everyone was comfortable and the ice was broken, that simulated laughter soon turned into genuine laughter, once the seeming silliness of the activity kicks in.

“It’s more contagious than a cough or a sneeze and relaxes the whole body. The residents really do enjoy it and it’s a good way to introduce something new”, Joe Green Park’s Activities Co-Ordinator

The sessions are very popular amongst the participants and many could be seen in hysterics by the end! There are many benefits to the sessions such as strengthening the immune system, lowering stress and boosting energy. Most importantly though, everyone loves a good laugh!
