Bethany moves mountains at Millfield: A story of growth and progression

18 December 2024 News

Bethany Wagstaff began working at Millfield Nursing Home in March 2014 at just 17 years old and is now celebrating 10 years of dedication to the wonderful Bolsover home. Since Christmas is a time of reflection and Bethany is celebrating yet another magical festive period at the home, we thought it was a great opportunity to hear more about her inspiring journey.

Home Manager, Karen, took Bethany on board for an apprenticeship back in 2014 as she immediately recognised Bethany’s potential to be a caring, inspiring young woman - Karen quickly realised that this perception was correct.

“On Bethany’s 18th birthday, I offered her a permanent carer’s post and many joyful tears were shed. It was also a happy and emotional day when she found out that she had been successful in her application for her Nurse Training; you could see how truly proud of herself she was.”

On being asked what made her so eager to stay on at Millfield, Bethany responded “Caring for others is what I always wanted to do when I grew up, and as soon as I stepped into Millfield I felt like I belonged – the whole team was, and still is, so helpful and lovely.”

Over the past 10 years, the supportive environment within the Millfield home and the teamwork Bethany has experienced has allowed her to progress immensely on both a personal and professional level. Now qualified as a nurse with her NVQ qualifications in her pocket, Bethany admits that her job is more demanding than people may realise but adds that’s it’s also incredibly rewarding.

Karen also commented on Bethany’s personal development during her time at Millfield, stating that she has really come out of her shell and learned so much about herself and others.

“I have seen Bethany grow from a sassy teenager to a professional young woman. She took every piece of feedback onboard and has grown in all areas to be a kind, caring nurse. I am very proud of her.”
