A pie-ceptional fundraiser for Dementia Action Week!

10 June 2025 News

From 19th – 25th May, Penwortham Grange and Lodge Care Home joined our bid to raise as much money as possible for Dementia Action Week, with all proceeds going to Alzheimer’s Society. Colleagues were challenged to organise exciting fundraising activities - and at our Preston care home, they were the *cream* of the crop with their pie-in-the-face event!

It’s not unusual to hear about Penwortham’s extraordinary efforts to create unforgettable events for their residents; last year, they surprised Joyce with a 100th birthday trip to Blackpool Ballroom Tower, where she used to spend her days dancing – so when they announced their fundraising challenge involved colleagues being pied in the face by residents, we were glad to hear they’re being just as adventurous as ever!

Joan, Joyce, Eileen and Yvonne were the proud pie-throwers of the day, with 100-year old Joyce admitting she ‘giggled like a little girl’ at the post-pie faces. The pies, which were plates of cream, were squished into colleagues faces – including Mark, the Chef at the Preston care home, who was one of the first to be pied.

Amongst the volunteers was Activity Co-Ordinator Jayne, who helped organise the event. “We wanted to do something fun, uplifting and silly to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Society. As a dementia-friendly care home, we understand the importance of the charity, and we were more than happy to support it.”

The fun-filled day was welcomed by all, including fellow colleagues who enjoyed watching the activity take place, and family members who came along to support the volunteers.

Debra Banks, Home Manager at the care home in Penwortham, told us how the event brought the fun and cheeky side out of everyone. “The residents were laughing and having a great time at the fundraiser. It was lovely to see our residents and colleagues strengthen their bond even further – and even better to see the residents reactions when they got to throw the pie in someone’s face!”

Alongside their pie day, Penwortham Grange and Lodge also hosted a car wash, which was a great success. These events were all in aid of Alzheimer’s Society; a charity dedicated to supporting people living with and affected by dementia. Offering residential dementia care themselves, colleagues at our Preston care home know all too well the need for more financial support to this incredible charity.

Volunteer’s Mark, Kate, Jayne and Ria’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed – in fact, they’ve received dozens of comments from family members and fellow colleagues on Facebook, with Michael saying “Brilliant! Well done all who took part” and Regional Operations Manager, Michelle Duvall, commenting “Well done team Penwortham!”
