Virtual Reminiscence at Cherry Trees
“Virtual Reminiscence” may sound like something out of a science fiction film, but residents at Cherry Trees care home in Rotherham, were recently taken on journey back through time using VR headsets!
As technology seems to be getting more space age by the day, residents at Cherry Trees had an amazing day when the company, Reminiscience, visited and gave residents the opportunity to experience a virtual tour of an old Sheffield and Rotherham, that residents remember from when they were younger.
Placing the VR headsets over their eyes, residents were transported back in time with other fellow residents and staff being able to see also via a tablet provided, meaning that residents using the VR could communicate and discuss what they were seeing and experience it with those around them. Re-visiting past landmarks and old favourite shops was a brilliant experience that was loved by all. “All residents engaged and really enjoyed it, the session is booked in again at the resident’s request.” Said Lisa Webster, Activities Co-Ordinator at Cherry Trees.
“That's where I went to see my granddaughter get married”, Edna exclaimed. Edna is Cherry Trees’ oldest resident at 99 years old, seeing Clifton Park Museum through the VR headset triggered the happy memory of her daughter’s wedding ceremony. After seeing that, Edna could not stop smiling.
Virtual Reality reminiscence therapy is slowly becoming an increasingly popular method of therapy amongst elderly residents and those suffering with dementia and it’s easy to see why. VR is an innovative way to stimulate resident’s memory, triggering memories by seeing and experiencing things they may not have seen in years. Judging by the smiles on the residents faces, the results were tremendous!
