Paulina, Home Manager at Middleton Park Lodge Nursing Home
  • Hi, Paulina! When did you start the Dementia Studies course?

I started the masters course in September 2017 as a part-time student, but took a break due to the pandemic. I wanted to focus my time on ensuring residents were safe and cared for during the outbreak, so I paused my learning. However, the hard work during COVID-19 led me to the ‘’Care Home Registered Manager Award for Yorkshire and Humberside’’ Regional Winner in 2020, which felt really gratifying!

  • Why did you decide to do the MSc course?

I was initially offered a place on Tissue Viability and Skin Repair at Cardiff University, but when the MSc in Dementia Studies came long, I knew it was the right course for me. I've been working with people living with dementia and their families since 2010, so my heart told me to accept the Dementia Studies course - and I'm glad I did!

  • Now you've graduated, are you planning to do any other courses or further education?

Yes! I'm already in the process of renewing my licence as a SONAS Licensed Practitioner. SONAS is a therapeutic activity, delivered as group and/or individual sessions for people living with moderate to later stage dementia. The sessions involve stimulation of all five senses, gentle physical exercise, quality engagement, communication stimulation, and relaxation. I will complete my exams and receive certification by the end of February 2024 in Dublin. In 2 years’ time I am planning to do my PHD in Dementia.

  • How do you think your new learnings will benefit the residents of Middleton Park Lodge Nursing Home?

In my opinion, having passion and knowledge is the most important aspect of managing a care home: by developing your own skills and knowledge in dementia care, you can help your team achieve the best possible outcomes for the residents at Middleton Park Lodge Nursing Home, and their families.

Implementing the knowledge into practice will benefit everyone in Middleton and show everyone there is outstanding dementia care possible - which I think we already do with our new Reconnect Community!

  • Thank you so much for answering our questions! Anything else you’d like to say?

I would like to say a massive thank you to all of my team who are supporting me on my managerial journey. I would like to thank them all for their hard work and commitment - you are all heroes for me!

The entire Orchard Care Homes group would like to give a massive congratulations to Paulina for graduating with an MSc in Dementia Studies - we are so proud of you, and thank you for all your hard work to ensure the residents at Middleton Park Lodge Nursing Home are safe, happy and healthy!
