Not so Blue January for the residents of Paddock Stile Manor

24 January 2024 News

What does Elvis Presley, National Brew Day and a football derby all have in common? They were all celebrated by Paddock Stile Manor Dementia Care Home in Houghton-le-Spring this months.

The home began their January activities with World Self Care Day- treating residents to a manicure and a pedicure. The hardest task of all was choosing nail polish colours! Some of the ladies chose shimmery neutrals while others opted for brighter colours. The colour of the season- red, was a fan favourite.

The home spent the first few days of the year preparing for the Sunderland FC football derby Vs Newcastle United. Residents and colleagues kicked off the big lead up to the game by colouring in and drawing football images.

Residents were asked to predict the results. Jackie and Effie both thought the match would end in a 2-2 tie and Ian predicted a 2-1 to Sunderland.

The big day came around and the whole home came together to watch a very intense game. Newcastle won 3-0 and although our home had its fingers crossed for Sunderland, they took the loss on the chin like the  champions they are and enjoyed some homemade jam tarts, which some of the residents made that afternoon.

On Monday the 8th January it was Elvis Presley’s Birthday and the home organised for local musician and singer, Callum Kewen to perform everybody’s favourite Elvis songs. The home came together and sang along with the songs, there was dancing and clapping. Jackie said it was a  ‘brilliant afternoon’.

National Brew day came around fast this year, the home set up a weird and wonderful tea tasting session including various different types of teas including green tea, berry teas, lemon and ginger and a toast and jam tea! Its fair to say that these weren’t to our peoples taste buds. Effie saying ‘I can’t believe somebody would drink that’. Luckily the morning was saved by the fan favourite, traditional earl grey tea, followed by some freshly baked scones with cream.

Amongst the activity packed schedule, there were also moments of reflection. George spent the afternoon telling the team all about his days in the Merchant Navy. The home decided to get the  world map out and have a look at all the countries George and some of the rest of them had been to.

With 2 more weeks of January left, we cant wait to see what else Paddock Stile Manor get up to.
