Frills, fun and furry friends: Lofthouse’s special visit from miniature ponies

22 January 2025 News

The recent cold and snow means that most of us are wrapped up indoors staying warm. However, Lofthouse Grange & Lodge Care Home got creative with their activities this month and decided to bring the outside, inside! The whole of the Wakefield care home enjoyed their visit from Mobile Mini Ponies and a magical morning was had by all.

As soon as Pinky and Matilda arrived at the home, accompanied by their wonderful owner Chantelle, the team were eager and ready to welcome them with lots of cooing and cuddling. Chantelle and her fur babies came from Mobile Mini Ponies based in Sheffield and it was their first time visiting the home – we’re sure they’ll be back in no time! Pinky and Matilda even arrived kitted out in matching, colour-coordinated outfits which put an extra smile on everybody’s faces.

Activities Coordinator, Donna, said: “The ponies’ tutus and bows made their presence in the home even more magical and it was so rewarding to see our residents’ faces as they trotted in and out of our various communities.”

“Having these sweet little animals come inside the home meant that it was an activity for everyone to enjoy. There are certain residents who relax in their bedrooms a lot during the winter and they loved having the mini Shetlands inside their room!”

It was a particularly special memory for one Lofthouse resident, Madeleine, who used to live on a farm growing up – Pinky and Matilda sensed her love for animals straight away and took such a liking to her.

Madeleine said: “We used to have so many animals when I was growing up and we had plenty of horses. I was always a bit nervous to try horse-riding but I loved caring for them!”

Not only were Pinky and Matilda well-fed on carrots throughout their journey around Lofthouse, but the residents enjoyed snacks too as Chantelle gave them all chocolates on her way around!

It was a truly special activity which was thoughtfully planned by Donna, with the help of the rest of the Lofthouse team. Not only is it an experience which we’re sure the residents will treasure for a long time, but it brought back memories to them too and encouraged them to share stories of days gone by! Thank you to all of the team, and to Mobile Mini Ponies, for such an incredible morning.
