Celebrating Professional Care Workers’ Week
Professional Care Workers’ Week (PCWW) is an annual event dedicated to recognising the incredible contributions of care professionals across the UK. At Orchard Care Homes, we are honoured to participate in this national celebration, shining a light on the dedication, skill, and compassion that define our exceptional care teams.
This week isn’t just about saying “thank you”, it’s about acknowledging the vital role each member of our team plays in making our care homes safe, welcoming, and filled with dignity and respect. We are fortunate to have colleagues who go above and beyond every day to ensure that the people we support receive the best care possible.
To celebrate PCWW, we’ve spoken to a few of our long-standing team members, who shared their experiences and thoughts on what this week means to them, as well as their advice for those thinking about a career in care.
Janet Bedworth, Regional Operations Manager
With over 30 years of experience in the care sector, 24 of which have been spent at Orchard Care Homes, Janet is an integral part of our team. When asked what she enjoys most about working in care, Janet said, “No two days are ever the same. I’m continually inspired by the exceptional work happening in our homes and the incredible care we provide.”
For Janet, Professional Care Workers' Week is an opportunity to highlight the skill and dedication of care workers across the UK: “It shines a spotlight on the vital role care workers play in supporting those in our care. It’s about recognising the skill, dedication, and expertise that underpin quality care.”
Her advice to those considering a career in care? “The most fulfilled carers often say they chose this path to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Compassion, patience, and empathy are their true superpowers - never forget how powerful those qualities can be."
Jessica Anciaes, Recruitment and Onboarding Lead
Jessica joined us in April 2024, but her journey in healthcare began much earlier. After completing her university studies at the age of 24, Jessica started her career as a Psychologist, driven by a strong passion for helping others. When she moved to the UK, she transitioned into a hands-on role as a Healthcare Assistant, gaining invaluable experience working directly with residents. In 2018, a new opportunity in healthcare recruitment opened up, and Jessica has been dedicated to connecting talented professionals with meaningful roles ever since, playing a key part in shaping the future of care.
What she loves most about working in this sector is the ability to make a difference in people’s lives, even from behind the scenes. As she puts it, “It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of someone’s journey, even if my role isn’t always in the spotlight.”
Her advice for anyone considering a career in care is simple: “Do it because you truly care. Working in care is more than just a job; it’s a calling. It’s about supporting people through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. To succeed, you need empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to make a difference.”
Rosemary Watkins, Domestic at Penwortham Grange and Lodge
Rosemary has worked in the care sector for 22 years, with 11 and a half of those years dedicated to Orchard. She shares why Professional Care Workers’ Week is important: “It’s a chance for everyone working in the care sector to be recognised for their outstanding work, dedication, and care. Each role is vital in creating a happy, safe, and supportive environment for those we care for.”
Her favourite part of working in care? “Getting to know each and every resident and ensuring they are happy.” And her advice for newcomers? “There will be days that are challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding. No two days are the same - keep going and keep smiling!”
Kayleigh Warsop, Senior Care Assistant at Riverdale Care Home
With 13 years of experience at Riverdale Care Home, Kayleigh has worn many hats, from Care Assistant to Senior, Activities Coordinator, and even cook. “I’ve worked through most roles in the care sector,” she says. “I love that our home is like a second family to me.”
Her favourite thing about working in care? “I feel at home here, and we often joke that it’s a home from home. There’s a real sense of belonging and community.”
Sharron Whaley, Home Manager at Cherry Trees Care Home
Having spent 44 years in the care sector, Sharron joined Orchard in 2014 to experience working in the independent care sector. She believes Professional Care Workers’ Week is important because it provides a platform to celebrate and share experiences. “It’s a time to recognise the hard work and dedication of care workers, and to shine a light on their role in supporting vulnerable people,” says Sharron.
For those considering a career in care, she advises: “If you possess qualities like compassion, kindness and strong communication skills, don’t hesitate. Do your research and find a good employer who offers training, support, and opportunities for career progression.”
Nicola Banner, Dementia Support Worker at Green Park Nursing Home
Nicola has worked at Green Park Nursing Home for over 18 months and shares that her favourite thing about working in the sector is simply the residents: “I adore them! Putting smiles on their faces every day is incredibly rewarding. I truly love my job.”
Her advice for anyone considering a career in the care sector? “It’s not what you think. I recommend everyone try it, you’ll be surprised how rewarding it is.
TJ Adamson, Peripatetic Manager for the North West and Midlands
TJ started his career in care at age 18 and has since worked across various homes, with a focus on delivering high-quality care. “I absolutely love the variety of work,” he says. “The different needs in each home keep me engaged and excited about the job.”
At Orchard Care Homes, we’re proud to have a team of people who embody the values of care, respect, and compassion. Professional Care Workers’ Week is just one moment to stop and say thank you, but the truth is, the hard work and dedication of our teams deserve recognition every single day.
Hayden Knight, CEO, said, "This Professional Care Workers' Week, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to every colleague across Orchard Care Homes. Your unwavering dedication, compassion, and professionalism are the backbone of the exceptional care we provide every day. You make a real difference in the lives of our residents and their families, and I couldn’t be prouder of the incredible work you do. Thank you for all that you bring to Orchard – not just this week, but every single day."
