British Sandwich Week 14 - 20th May

British consumers munch their way through over 11.5 billion sandwiches each year and if you laid those sandwiches tip to end, they would wrap around the world 44 times. - It’s British Sandwich Week this week, and as a favourite of the residents in our home, we have some fascinating sandwich facts and figures. - The British public paid over £7.8 m in sandwiches last years. - There are over 300,000 people employed in the sandwich industry in the UK. - The first ‘packaged’ sandwich is believed to have been launched by Marks & Spencer in 1985 thanks to the creation of an ‘easy seal’ pack - Chicken is the most popular filling, accounting for around 30% of all sandwiches. - The modern British sandwich is claimed to be named after Lord John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. One story is that he was a keen gambler, who didn’t like to take breaks away from the game. He would ask waiters to bring him slices of meat between two pieces of bread, which coined the phrase amongst his peers, ‘I’ll have the same as Sandwich’ hence the name.
