Dame Vera Lynn is celebrating her 100th birthday today in a very unexpected way, by bringing out a brand new album.   Born Vera Margaret Welch, Vera has gained her title through her exhilarating music and acting career, gaining popularity during the Second World War. Travelling the world, she played an important role in boosting morale of the English troops, singing her most well-known songs. After the war, she appeared on radio and television across the UK and America, and in the late 1960’s even hosted her own BBC One variety series. Vera Lynn devoted much of her time and energy to charity work connected with ex-servicemen, disabled children, and breast cancer. For her birthday celebrations, a charity concert will take place at the London Palladium where a variety of famous acts will be performing, including Russell Watson and Alexander Armstrong. Her new album, ‘Vera Lynn 100’, is a compilation album released on the 17th March 2017, containing some of the singers most famous hits, including The White Cliffs of Dover, I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles and one of our resident’s favourites, We’ll Meet Again. To mark her 100th birthday and release of her new album, a 350ft projection of ‘The Forces Sweetheart’ will light up the white cliffs of Dover. A further tribute is BBC Two’s programme with Vera and her daughter Virginia, as they look back at home videos and reminisce of her past career.
