50 Years as a Chef: Ian Berry’s Secret Ingredients for Happiness

11 October 2024 News

Ian Berry, the face behind Green Lodge’s delicious dishes, joined us at our County Durham care home in July 2019 and has recently celebrated a wonderful 5 year milestone in his Orchard Care Homes journey. To commemorate the occasion, Ian has been reflecting on his career and achievements before and during his role as Green Lodge’s beloved Chef.

Over the course of his 50-year culinary career, Ian has worked in a variety of impressive settings from high-end restaurants to 5* London hotels. His claims to fame are that he has faced Ann Robinson in an introductory round to gameshow “The Weakest Link” and… he has even worked alongside well-known chef and TV sensation Ainsley Harriott!

One aspect of his role which has remained largely the same throughout all of his career is that Ian’s best work is done behind the stove – “I am the meat and sauce man! I’ve always thrived behind the stove cooking fish, meat, sauces, you name it. I make a fabulous roast dinner. In fact, my signature dish which I’ve always loved to cook at home is Torre de Rossini!”.

When asked about the highlights of his role, Ian told us: “The sense of fulfilment it gives me knowing that I am providing residents with good food and a healthy appetite is unmatched. I’m even on first-name basis with all of the people we care for and it’s so rewarding.”.

Although he admits the role can be hectic sometimes (especially on delivery days!), Ian emphasised how teamwork makes a huge difference. “The sense of camaraderie at Green Lodge is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. The collaborative approach and support from other colleagues is the reason why we can provide nutritious meals for our people and why I love what I do.”.

In a work setting as rewarding as this one, there are always going to be times and memories that stay with you the most – and for Ian, Christmas is everything. “Having the ability to make this time of the year special for everyone is the highlight of my year.” said Ian. “And I don’t just mean Christmas Day, but the whole week! I particularly love the joyous Boxing Day dinners where we have a nice, homely meal like a cottage pie and the people sit and share Christmas memories and stories.”

He provides our people with tasty food, diet expertise, and a happy, friendly face which everyone knows and loves! Thank you, Ian, for all your hard work and dedication to Green Lodge.”.
