Wishes have been coming true for residents at Langfield Care Home in Lancashire, thanks to a new ‘wishing tree’ initiative in the home. Staff at the 54-bed home recently set up a series of small, fibre optic trees around the home, onto which residents are encouraged to hang paper ‘wishes’. The wishes can range from activities residents wish to take part in, to more personal things. One of the first wishes to be granted so far was for resident Catherine, who expressed that she missed having a dog to walk. Wasting no time in granting the wish, Home Administrator Tara Meadows brought in her two shiatzu puppies, Bailey and Samson, for Catherine to walk around the home and its grounds. Catherine commented, “I am a big dog-lover and have kept them all my life. Being able to walk dogs again has been such a wonderful experience, bringing back lots of memories. I loved every minute of it.” Home Manager Brendan Gaffney commented, “The wishing tree is a fantastic opportunity for residents to express something that is meaningful to them, and offers a creative way for staff to engage with residents through discussion and reminiscence.  Often it can be the simplest things that will make someone’s day, and this is a way to bring those things about.” To keep up to date with news from the home, follow us on Facebook and YouTube.
