Fans of knitting at Cantley Grange in Doncaster have been using a variety of materials, including wool, ribbon and large buttons, to create sensory items known as ‘Twiddlemuffs’, a sensory hand-warmer used by those living with dementia. The idea was picked up online by Home Manager Sandra Allen after reading about the benefits of the items for dementia patients in hospitals; wearing the items on hands and twiddling with the textured fabrics can help to combat feelings of restlessness. A resident at Cantley Grange in Doncaster commented “I enjoy knitting most of the time but I have really enjoyed making these”. The Twiddlemuffs provide a source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation at the same time as keeping hands snug and warm. “They are brilliant and give our residents something to focus on”, said Sandra.
