A Novel Idea for World Book Day!
As many children and adults celebrate World Book day today by dressing as their favourite book characters, the people of Orchard Care Homes’, Thornton Hall, Crosby had other ideas as they set about an air hockey challenge, constructing the table-top court using paperbacks from the care home.
World Book Day, created by UNESCO nearly 30 years ago, as a worldwide celebration of books and reading is a popular event bringing people together to enjoy reading, so it was a fun take on the celebrations to see the books being used in a completely different way!
The novel idea, took this fairground classic into a whole new genre by making use of old books, a tissue box and light weight ball – plus two willing participants each game! The competitors were cheered on by care staff, who upcycled the traditional game to add a little light-hearted activity to stimulate cognitive skills and hand eye co-ordination. Danielle Crosby, Activities Co-ordinator, at Orchard’s Thornton Hall, says: “Our lively air-hockey game was such a boost at our home today and really brought out our people’s competitive spirit. We are always planning new ways to entertain everyone and help to keep people moving, socialising and using their fine and gross motor skills. Many were very energised and it was great to find a new use for the many books we have too!”
