Post festive blues are common amongst most of us, but did you know there is a date dedicated to ‘The Saddest Day of the Year’? The title ‘Blue Monday’ has been given to the third Monday in January, calculated using an equation originally established to help the travel industry understand and analyse holiday trends, such as why and when people book holidays. The first ‘Blue Monday’ fell on the 24th January 2005, after a press release was published under the name of Cliff Arnall, by holiday company Sky Travel. The release stated that certain variables were used in the equation to determine when the day would fall in the month. These include; weather conditions, amount of time since Christmas, failed New Year’s Resolutions, low motivation levels and financial position after the holiday period. Monday 16th January is this years ‘Blue Monday’, but we urge you not to worry too much. The concept has been labelled as ‘pseudoscience’ so we can reassure our residents that there will be plenty of activities taking place in our homes this January.
