Refreshments And Reminiscence On The Menu For Derbyshire Home's Baking Club

12th January 2018

There is perhaps nothing quite as quintessentially British as Afternoon Tea, which has fast become a favourite pastime of residents at The Grange Care Centre, in Derbyshire. With a range of tantalising treats on offer, courtesy of the recently established Baking Club, the home’s Vintage Tea Room has become a central hub for residents to socialise in.

A recent Afternoon Tea session saw residents enjoying a classic selection of sandwiches and hot drinks, together with a succulent, chocolate marble cake.

One resident, Joan commented, “The patterns in the cake were absolutely beautiful and the texture was wonderfully succulent, I could have eaten the whole thing.”

After the success of the marble cake, the group, including Colin, Margaret, Ron, Yvonne, Edith, Janice, and Joan, discussed their favourite sweet treats, before deciding that a traditional carrot cake was to be the next baking project.

The Vintage Tea Room was set during last summer, to provide a quiet place for residents to get together with friends and relatives. The home’s activities team frequently hold reminiscence sessions in the room, with the traditional décor, including old advertisement posters often acting as prompts for discussion.

Activity Coordinator Mandy Peel comments, “The Vintage Tea Room is a quiet place where residents can come to socialise with each other, and with their relatives.

“Afternoon Tea is an incredibly popular activity as it promotes inclusion of everyone. Those who want to be hands-on and prepare the refreshments are given a strong sense of purpose and responsibility, and those who prefer not to take part in the practical side can enjoy getting together with friends and sampling the goods.”
