19th May 2017
There was a victorious celebration at Lymewood Court in Merseyside and Chorley Lodge in Lancashire recently, as they celebrated ‘Victory in Europe Day’ at the beginning of May.
The sun was shining when Chorley Lodge care home began its preparation for their VE Day party, inviting relatives to join the celebration in marking the important date. The morning was spent with residents busily making bunting for home, which was put up around the communal areas of the home.
Singer and staff member Martyn Shaw opened celebrations with his own renditions of well-known war songs, from artists such as Doris Day and Dame Vera Lynn.
Lynne Bleakley, Activity Coordinator at Chorley Lodge said “We had a wonderful time remembering a very special day for our country. It was beautiful weather so we moved the party outdoors which raised everybody’s spirits. The staff and I were really interested in all the stories the residents were telling us, especially about the rationing during the war.”
Lymewood Court also celebrated the day with a party and a visit from music group Evergreen, who rehearse at the 40-bed home and in return, perform regularly to the residents. The group entertained the residents and relatives with songs and trivia from the past before everyone shared tea and cakes together.
Celebrated on the 8th May, Victory in Europe Day, better known as VE Day, commemorates the German surrender and the end of the Second World War.
